Set Up Amaso AI, Free on WordPress.org: Your First AI Visibility Check

free AI visibility plugin: Your first AI visibility check, free

In short: Amaso AI Free is a free AI visibility plugin on WordPress.org. You install it from your WordPress dashboard, confirm the business profile it detects, list the questions your customers really ask, then run a check in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Perplexity with your own provider key. Each result records the exact question, the engine, the date and whether your site was cited, so you know where you stand before you change anything.

More and more customers ask an AI assistant before they search Google: “which accountant in Nairobi handles small companies?”, “best guesthouse near the lake in Gisenyi?”. If the answer names three of your competitors and not you, you lose the customer without ever seeing them. The first step is simply to look. This tutorial gets you there in one sitting.

What you need before you start

  • A WordPress site where you can install plugins (WordPress 6.2 or higher is the safe choice, as stated in the plugin’s details on WordPress.org).
  • PHP 8.1 or higher and MySQL 5.7+ or MariaDB 10.3+. Your host can confirm in a minute.
  • Optional but useful: an API key from at least one AI provider (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google or Perplexity). Without a key you still get the local audit, schema and llms.txt; with a key you can run the citation checks.

Step 1: install Amaso AI Free

  1. In WordPress, go to Plugins > Add New and search for “Amaso AI”.
  2. Install and activate Amaso AI Free.
  3. Open the new Amaso AI menu and start the guided setup. It takes about three minutes.

Step 2: check the business profile

Under Amaso AI > Setup, Amaso AI shows the business profile it detected from your site: name, activity, location and public contact details. Correct anything wrong now. AI assistants describe a business from what they can read about it, so a clear, consistent profile is the base for everything else.

Step 3: choose the questions to track

This is the step that decides whether your results mean anything. Track the questions a new customer would ask, not your brand name:

Weak queryBetter query
“Your Company Ltd”“accounting firm for small businesses in Kigali”
“bakery”“where to order a birthday cake in Lagos”
“best hotel”“quiet guesthouse for a business trip in Musanze”

Start with 10 to 20 questions, in the languages your customers use. Lite does not limit the number of tracked keywords, but a short, honest list is easier to read and to act on.

Step 4: run the local audit

Before spending anything on AI calls, run the local audit. It needs no provider account. It reviews your business context and content, and gives you an action plan. In the same place you can check the public JSON-LD schema Amaso AI generates and the llms.txt file it publishes. Be clear about what these are: schema helps machines understand your pages, and llms.txt is an optional publication format, not a proven ranking or citation signal. If schema is new to you, read our beginner’s guide to JSON-LD for AI visibility and llms.txt explained.

Step 5: add your own AI key and run a check

Amaso AI Free works “bring your own key”: you paste an API key from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google or Perplexity, and the checks run on your account with that provider. Read the data and cost disclosures Amaso AI shows first. The provider bills its usage to you, separately from any Amaso AI plan, and its own limits apply.

Then run a check on your questions. For each one, Amaso AI records:

  • the exact question asked;
  • the engine and the time of the check;
  • the answer or citation evidence available, and whether your site was cited.

Two honest warnings. Results can differ from what someone sees in the consumer ChatGPT or Gemini app, because apps personalise and change answers. And one check is a snapshot: repeat the same questions over time to see a trend. Our guide to citation rate explains how to read the numbers.

Step 6: leave IndexNow off until you decide

Amaso AI can submit your URLs to search engines through IndexNow, but in Lite it stays off unless you switch it on. Turn it on when you are ready for new or updated pages to be pushed.

What to do with your first results

  • Cited? Note which page was used and keep it accurate and up to date.
  • A competitor is named instead? Open the sources the engine used. They show what kind of page wins: a clear service page, a FAQ, a directory listing, a review.
  • Nobody local is named? That is an opening. A precise page that answers the exact question often helps. See how to write FAQ content AI assistants can cite.

Amaso AI cannot promise that an AI will cite you, and nobody honestly can. What it gives you is a dated record of what the engines say, so you can tell whether your changes help.

Lite or a paid plan?

Lite runs checks when you click. Paid plans add scheduled AI checks with email alerts, Google Search Console data, competitor share of voice and PDF reports; Pro and Agency add GA4 data and GEO Autopilot. They are priced per year: Starter $35.99, Pro $79.99 (up to 3 websites) and Agency $199.99 (unlimited websites), with AI usage still billed by your provider. Details on the pricing page.

Frequently asked questions

Is Amaso AI Free really free?

Yes. The plugin is free on WordPress.org. If you run AI citation checks, the AI provider bills its own usage on your key.

Which AI engines can Amaso AI Free check?

It works with OpenAI (ChatGPT), Anthropic (Claude), Google (Gemini) and Perplexity, each with your own API key.

Do I need an AI key to start?

No. The business profile, local audit, schema and llms.txt work without a key. You need a key for your own AI checks and AI suggestions. If you turn them on, a few free checks run by Amaso AI also work without a key.

Does Amaso AI track Google AI Overviews?

No. Amaso AI checks AI assistants through their providers and, on paid plans, Google Search Console data. It does not track Google AI Overviews or AI Mode.

Will installing Amaso AI make ChatGPT recommend my business?

No tool can guarantee that. Amaso AI shows you where you stand and what to improve, and measures whether the changes help over time.
