In short: AI assistants recommend local businesses they can understand and verify. To be recommended by ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude, make one page per service that says plainly what you do, where, for whom and at what price; describe your business the same way on your site, your Google Business Profile and the directories in your city; collect honest reviews; and check every few weeks which businesses the assistants name for your customers’ questions. No one can guarantee a recommendation, but these steps remove the reasons an assistant has to leave you out.
How does an AI assistant choose which local business to name?
When someone asks “which boutique hotel in Kigali is best for a business trip”, the assistant searches the web, reads a handful of pages and writes one answer with two or three names. It favours businesses whose pages answer that exact need, whose details match across several sources, and that other sites mention. A business with a beautiful site but no clear service pages, or a different address on every profile, is hard to verify, so it is easy to skip.
Step 1: do your pages answer the questions customers ask?
- One page per service, not one page listing everything. “Home eye tests in Lagos” is easier to cite than “Our services”.
- Answer in the first lines: what it is, where you do it, who it is for, how much it costs or how pricing works, how to book.
- Use your customers’ words, in their language. If your customers search in French, Swahili or Kinyarwanda, publish those pages too.
- Add a short FAQ with the questions you hear on the phone. Our guide on FAQ content that gets cited shows the format.
Step 2: is your business described the same way everywhere?
Use the same business name, address, phone number, opening hours and one-sentence description on your website, your Google Business Profile, your social profiles and local directories. Mark it up on your site with LocalBusiness structured data, so machines read the same facts people do. Our JSON-LD guide walks through it on WordPress.
Step 3: are you mentioned where assistants already look?
Assistants trust what several independent sources agree on. Useful mentions for a local business are real ones: local press, chambers of commerce, industry associations, partner businesses, event pages, and reviews on the platforms your customers use. Ask happy customers for a review that says what you did for them. Never buy links or fake reviews: they put your business at risk and add nothing an assistant trusts.
Step 4: can AI crawlers read your site?
Check your robots.txt: if OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot or PerplexityBot are blocked, ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity are less likely to show your pages in their answers. Also make sure your key pages load fast on mobile networks and are not hidden behind forms or scripts. A short llms.txt file can give AI tools a clean summary of your site, as long as it stays up to date.
Step 5: what do the assistants say now, and after your changes?
Write down ten questions your customers ask, without your brand name, and ask them to ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity. Note who is named and which pages are cited. Do it again a few weeks after your changes. Our guide How to check whether ChatGPT cites your WordPress site explains how, by hand or with Amaso AI.
What does this look like on a real site?
Lens & Co by Tiara, an eyewear store in Lagos, followed this approach with our partner agency Vatam, and followed its searches in Amaso AI. In October 2026, Vatam’s own checks found the store named by Google’s AI Overviews (checked by hand, since Amaso AI does not track them), ChatGPT and Claude, where none named it in July. One store over a few weeks is an example, not a promise: results depend on the market, the competition and the work done.
“It measures your AI citations and tells you what to fix next.”
Victor Olanrewaju, founder of Vatam. Victor works in growth for Amaso AI, and his full review says so.
What should a local business not expect?
- A guaranteed place in AI answers: the AI companies decide what their assistants say.
- The same answer every time: answers change with the wording, the location and the day.
- Results without the work: a plugin measures and points to fixes; the pages, reviews and mentions still have to be done.
Frequently asked questions
Does my Google Business Profile matter for ChatGPT?
It matters for consistency: it is one of the most visible places your name, address and hours appear, so it should match your website exactly. Google’s own AI features also draw on Google’s data about local businesses.
Should I write pages in local languages?
Yes, if your customers search in them. An assistant answering in French or Swahili looks for pages that answer in that language.
How long does it take to be recommended?
There is no fixed delay. Assistants pick up changes when they next read your pages and the pages that mention you. Track the same questions every few weeks to see the trend.
Can someone do this for my business?
Yes. Our team and Vatam can do the work for you, starting with a free consultation. See AI visibility, done for you.
